Description
Sahara's fight (with red and white) is a representational portrait of my daughters battle with Leukemia. The Red and White represents her blood. It struck me as odd that ones life could be dependent on two colours. The balance of these colours represents wellness. The background is symbolic of her journey so far and the changes in balance. There is a small patch of uniformity representing a healthy future. No parent could ever imagine what the journey of child cancer is like unless it has been experienced. As a parent I have had to watch my daughter be close to death on many occasions due both to the cancer and the drugs. She has had a stroke caused by the drugs, anaphylaxis, renal failure, shingles twice, cmv, feeding tubes, hair loss five times, big weight gain, weight loss. She has had to endure two and a half years of daily chemo in all forms. She has had endless general anesthetics to have chemo injected into her spine to go to her brain. She has had to have injections, endless blood transfusions, IV antibiotics endlessly. Over the past three years being well was a dream. Due to no immunity she is constantly sick. She missed 18 months of school and was isolated due to being unwell and not being able to go where people were. There were so many things she could eat. Many mad dashes to the hospital in the night as the risk of infection and blood poisoning is high. The list of side effects are so long, skin rashes, sickness, pain, mouth sores, stunted growth and the list goes on and on. We have watched so many children loose the battle. It has been heartbreaking. The only way to explain child cancer is that you are at war. You don't know when the next attack will happen you dont know who will be killed. You can never relax, you constantly live in fear, you are haunted by bad memories, you are never the same. My daughter is a fighter, but so are all the kids, they all have parents who love them and they all deserve to live. My daughter is now 6 months post treatment. She is extremely positive and full of light. She loves life and lives every minute. Her heart is full of goodness. She is an A student and in an accelerator class despite missing so much school. She is my hero. Everyday she reminds me to squeeze every moment from life and be grateful for the life you have.

Artist Statement
“From the day I picked up a brush I felt I had found my reason for being”.
Sandra Marie Adams lives on a small island off the coast of New Zealand.
Sandra’s work is often driven by a strong autobiographical element. Her paintings are mostly an outward manifestation of the world inside her head. Sandra loves to always be challenging herself as an artist. As a result her subject matter tends to varied. Sandra describes herself as a colourist and uses colour to evoke mood and emotion.
Waiheke Island, where she lives, features strongly in her paintings. Often the beautiful seascapes are used as the background for a story, comment or observation.
Sandra has always been passionate about the injustices in the world and the interplay of good and evil. Sandra often explores these themes in her art. Sandra has also endlessly questioned the validity of the conventional biblical stories. She enjoys portraying her own controversial version of the truth through her art.
